CSR and clean production measures in a hotel
Information
Making all the difference...
- Corporate social responsibility (CSR) and clean production (CP) measures make a big difference to a Black Sea hotel
- Savings of € 22 300 a year by cutting water, waste and energy bills
Hotel Kotva is a two-star hotel located near the beach on the Black Sea coast. It was built in 1972 and has been renovated four times. The last renovation was from 2008. The hotel guests are mainly from Serbia, the Czech Republic, Russia, and the Scandinavian countries, organised by travel agencies or through individual reservations.
The hotel has 450 rooms and it is geared towards leisure tourism. Air-conditioners are provided for the hot summer moneths, the hotel's high season. Electricity consumption in the hotel was an issue. Management decided to implement several measures in terms of work organisation and clean production to optimise operations and cut costs.
Key results
In terms of CSR, the hotel implemented several measures including a customer satisfaction survey and special agreements with proven and qualified employees to ensure their employment for the next season, which improved operations and the quality of service. The hotel also introduced a number of CP measures under the following headings:
- Water: installing shower water time-limiters and dual-mode cisterns in toilets
- Waste: separating paper from plastic which led to savings of over € 5 000 a year without additional investment
- Energy: installing automatic daytime switch-off devices for lighting
- Information: placing signs asking guests not to change towels every day unless needed
