Efficient water consumption by raising environmental awareness at London Met
Information
The art of water saving
- Awareness-raising and practical measures save water on campus
- Reduced annual water consumption by 1 183 m3 and cost savings of around € 2 660
London Metropolitan University is one of the top five universities in the UK for reducing carbon emissions and a finalist in the 2012 Green Gown Awards for reducing its environmental impact.
The university ran a series of ‘climate week’ awareness events which featured a ‘water day’ to communicate to staff and students about water efficiency. Art students were asked to design a poster to raise awareness of the importance of saving water and a book token was given to the best designer. Besides encouraging behavioural change among staff and students, practical measures were also taken to save water, such as installing passive infrared (PIR) flush controls and automatic meter-reading (AMR) equipment.
Key results
By implementing these actions, London Met has reduced its annual water consumption by 1 183 m3 and achieved cost savings of around € 2 660 (£2 350).
