Hygiene measures lead to water-savings in Munich hospital
Information
Cleaner and greener plumbing
- ~600 m3 saved water per year
- Annual cost savings of € 2 400
The Municipal Hospital in Munich, Germany replaced ten conventional taps in the canteen/kitchen area with modern taps containing automatic shut-off valves. Although this measure was initially intended to increase hygiene safety in the kitchen, it also led to a significant reduction in the amount of water consumed. It showed how refits and upgrades for one reason (health, safety, modernisation) can have intended or unintended environmental advantages as well.
Key benefits
Investing € 3 000 in this measure resulted in annual water-savings of around 600 m3 (both hot and cold), which is equivalent to 25 % of water consumed in the kitchen area. This measure translated into yearly cost savings of about € 2 400.
